I was born and raised in Chicago, the Windy City, more than 2,000 miles away from San Diego. When I enlisted in the United States Navy, I was excited about staying physically fit, earning money for college, exploring different countries, and beginning a journey I never could have imagined. In the early 2000s, I was assigned to Naval Air Station North Island, and my life has been transformed ever since. The Navy played a crucial role in shaping my life, and after transitioning out, I applied the lessons and skills I learned to become a better person, entrepreneur, and employee in San Diego.
About Lakeysha Sowunmi
Q: Please tell us a little bit about your family.
I have been married for over 24 years and proud mother of 3 young adults.
Q: Please tell us about your current, past, or future career. What do you love most about what you do?
For over 20 years I have worked relentlessly as a health advocate, author, media spokesperson, and community organizer. One of my proudest achievements was being named one of the first women to receive the California “Champion Mom” award from the California Department of Public Health, which allowed me to inspire healthy changes within my community. I was also featured in the “Legacy of Health” statewide media campaign, appearing on billboards, radio ads, and television commercials. Throughout my career, I’ve been honored to speak at major events, including the Clinton Foundation’s “Health Matters” conference, and to serve as the keynote speaker at a statewide California Department of Public Health summit. In the affordable housing sector, I have overseen residents services and programs in the areas of financial literacy, health and wellness, and education that are designed to engage and empower diverse populations. I proudly drive positive change while ensuring alignment with nonprofit regulatory requirements. My leadership, which is rooted in effective communication and a hands-on approach, has been instrumental in creating an environment that promotes personal growth within the community. As a respected speaker, spokesperson, and public health advocate, I remain committed to advancing healthier communities and improving the well-being of those we serve. I am also the founding President of San Diego Women’s Affordable Housing Network. Women’s Affordable Housing Network (WAHN) is the only national nonprofit organization that focuses on promoting women’s empowerment and workplace equity for all individuals in the affordable housing industry. This initiative has built a national network of people with a shared passion for affordable housing.
