Liz Edwards is the visionary behind the San Diego Spirits Festival, which she founded in 2009, its now in its 16th year, The festival is one of Southern California’s premier celebration of craft cocktails, premium spirits, and vibrant culture. Known for transforming the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego in La Jolla into a spirited playground, Liz blends world-class brands, award-winning mixologists, live entertainment, and coastal glamour into one unforgettable weekend.
Liz Edwards created the San Diego Spirits Festival to unite the community in an upscale, high-energy festival that captures the vibrant spirit of San Diego. Each year, she evolves the event to feature fresh experiences, emerging trends, and top-tier talent — ensuring that both brands and guests leave inspired. Her hands-on approach includes consulting with industry leaders and traveling nationwide to other festivals, constantly gathering ideas to keep SDSF at the forefront.
About Liz Edwards
Q: Please tell us a little bit about your family.
Born in Australia an married to Alan Edwards, we have 5 children and three grandchildren. I share a love of sailing and global travel with my husband. A dedicated athlete, I has completed 16 marathons and countless 5Ks and 10Ks, and I remain passionate about health, fitness, and living life to the fullest.
Q: Please tell us about your current, past, or future career. What do you love most about what you do?
“What I love most about what I do is creating an unforgettable space where the world of spirits comes alive — bringing together innovative brands, talented mixologists, and passionate enthusiasts to celebrate, connect, and discover something new each year.”
Q: What advice would you give to people?
Build something you’re passionate about, and don’t be afraid to reinvent yourself along the way. Success comes from hard work, persistence, and surrounding yourself with people who inspire you — whether they’re industry leaders, creative partners, or loyal fans. Keep evolving, keep learning, and never stop raising the bar for yourself.
Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 to 10 years?
In the next decade, I see myself as the guiding spirit of the San Diego Spirits Festival — still shaping its vision and celebrating its growth, but with the freedom to enjoy life’s adventures. I’ll mentor the next generation of talent, travel to explore the best spirits and festivals around the world, and savor more time sailing, running, and discovering new places with Alan. My goal is to see SDSF continue to thrive long beyond me, standing as a vibrant testament to creativity, community, and the joy of raising a glass together.

Q: What are a few of your favorite restaurants in our community?
La Jolla has some of the most eclectic restaurants, our go to is Eddie V’s they have amazing views and a great happy hour
Q: How long have you lived or worked in our community?
I’ve lived in Bird Rock for over 30 years. Its one of the best communities in La Jolla
Q: Who is the most interesting person you’ve met here in our community?
My husband Alan Edwards
Q: What current or former local business makes you the most nostalgic about our community?
I really miss La Jolla Sports Club — it was more than just a gym; it was a true community hub. When it closed during COVID, I felt the loss of the people, the familiar faces, and that special sense of connection we all shared. It wasn’t just about working out; it was about belonging, supporting each other, and being part of something bigger
Q: What is your favorite thing or something unique about our community?
Bird Rock is my happy place — a little pocket of coastal charm where ocean views meet friendly waves, both from the sea and the neighbors. I love that I can stroll to my favorite coffee shop, watch a breathtaking sunset from Calumet Park, and feel part of a community that’s as welcoming as it is beautiful. It’s the perfect blend of laid-back beach life and vibrant local spirit, and I can’t imagine calling anywhere else home
Q: If you could choose anyone alive today and not a relative, with whom would you love to have lunch? Why? And where locally would you meet for this lunch?
I’m a huge Elvis fan — his music, style, and spirit have always inspired me. If I could have lunch with him, I’d love to share some classic Southern comfort food and sip on a refreshing Mint Julep while swapping stories and soaking up that legendary charisma

Q: What is one of your favorite movies? TV shows?
Right now, I’m completely obsessed with the Gilded Age — the elegance of the clothing, the richness of the sets, and the way every detail tells a story of opulence and grandeur. It’s a world where glamour meets craftsmanship, and I’m inspired by how it blends history with timeless style
Q: (Even for friends or family), what is something interesting that most people don’t know about you?
I’m proud of my Greek heritage, and though I was born in Australia, I didn’t learn to speak English until I was six years old. Growing up bilingual gave me a unique perspective and a deep appreciation for culture, language, and connection — values I carry with me in everything I do

My family — my husband, children, and grandchildren — inspire me every day to be better, to push harder, and to create something meaningful that lasts beyond me. Their love and support are the foundation of everything I do.

My ideal San Diego weekend is all about relaxation and reading — soaking up the coastal breeze with a good book in hand, whether it’s on a quiet beach, a sunny patio, or curled up at home. It’s the perfect way to recharge and find inspiration in the simple joys of life.
