About Beth Johnson

Q: Please tell us a little bit about your family.

I am a Millennial business owner living in a beach cottage with my Old English Sheepdog named Melian and my Sheepadoodle named Chavela. We love to be outside in nature and go on adventures.

Q: Please tell us about your current, past, or future career. What do you love most about what you do?

I have a Masters in User Experience Design and I work professionally as a Senior Product/UX Designer. I am currently on a team with Experian. On the side I have a YouTube channel called Now Departing Ordinary where I interview and chat with unconventional people making their dreams a reality. I love connecting with other creatives, surfers, yogis, content creators, and fellow business owners. I aspire to motivate others to pursue their dream lives and improve their craft.

Q: What advice would you give to people?

The first and most important advice is to start. JUST DO IT. Once you rip the Bandaid off it gets easier. Take imperfect action. Once you’ve started the next best advice is to be consistent and set your ego aside. Don’t give up and keep taking action.

Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 to 10 years?

This is a big question! In 5 years I hope to have content creation be a bigger part of my life that allows me to travel and continue to help inspire and motivate others. Additionally, I would like to host surf and yoga retreats in tropical locations.

Beth Johnson & Our Community

Q: What are a few of your favorite restaurants in our community?

I love Plumeria for the vegan options they have. A fancy restaurant I really enjoy is Animae. The most fun brunch spot is Morning Glory.

Q: How long have you lived or worked in our community?

I have been part of the community for nearly 4 years now. I relocated here from Austin, TX.

Q: Who is the most interesting person you’ve met here in our community?

This is such a hard question as there are so many exceptional people around which is what makes San Diego such a great spot to live. The community is the highlight. Someone who stands out to me is my mailman! He is such a kind, friendly, warm, and thoughtful person. The dogs love seeing him and we always have a nice chat.

Q: What current or former local business makes you the most nostalgic about our community?

I have to say that Izola is the best bakery I have ever been to in the US. I love the space, the quality, the ambiance, and the simplicity of it all. I also love Vals Corner because they have great coffee and the whole crew is so lovely there. My go-to yoga studios are Indie and Riffs! Both are excellent.

Q: What is your favorite thing or something unique about our community?

The most obvious choice here is the proximity to the beach, access to waves, and being able to gather outdoors so effortlessly. I love surfing the pier and meeting my neighbors in the water. I feel a strong sense of community. I love seeing friendly faces out and about. There is also so much surf history around that makes me very happy to be immersed in.

Q: If you could choose anyone alive today and not a relative, with whom would you love to have lunch? Why? And where locally would you meet for this lunch?

Oprah. She’s wise, has grit, is an incredible businesswoman, philanthropist, mentor, and leader, and she has made a massive positive impact on the world.

For Fun

Q: What is one of your favorite movies? TV shows?

My favorite movie is called Medianeras (Side Walls). It’s a film in Spanish that’s set in Buenos Aires, Argentina where I lived in my 20’s while I studied Design. It makes me very nostalgic to see the city. My favorite filmmaker is Wes Anderson. My favorite TV show is Broad City. It’s is outrageous and hilarious.

Q: (Even for friends or family), what is something interesting that most people don’t know about you?

I have a decent understanding of the French language and would love to do a language immersion experience in France to improve my conversational skills!

Q: What would you rate a 10 out of 10?

It’s hard for me to state one specific thing so I guess I would have to say the concept of travel. Experiencing the world is the best investment I have ever made. I hope to continue and have others join me. Travel to me is 10/10 because it teaches you how to be resilient, present, open, curious, wise, sociable, consci\ and shows you how we are all connected.

Q: Who inspires you to be better?

The insights I gain from others who have gone before me. Those who are open books, strong leaders, and soulful teachers. I am drawn to passionate individuals who exercise self-discipline as it demonstrates to me ways in which I can grow and in turn inspire others in my network to become their best selves as well.

Q: What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

Radical self-responsibility. You are the captain of your own ship, and the master of your own destiny.

Q: What Neighborhood do you live in?

Ocean Beach

What I love about my Neighborhood:

The warm and inviting people who welcome you in. Plus the surf!

Please describe your ideal San Diego weekend:

Wake up early, get a coffee while walking the dogs, run into a few people on the street, have a nice chat, go to check the waves, come back to surf, have a healthy plant-based breakfast, head to Kate Sessions to lay out, read, sunbathe in a hammock or do some slacklining, head to a yoga class, see some friends for dinner, and go salsa dancing.

Q: Finally, what three words or phrases come to mind when you think of the word HOME?

Nature, Energetic, Connection
