It was time for a new adventure after my family’s vineyard, Klein Constantia, in Cape Town South Africa where I was CEO for 20 years was sold. So my wife, Anne, I and our 4 kids relocated to Bird Rock, La Jolla. We opened LJ Crafted Wines, where our goal is to run a successful high quality wine business selling all our wines in 1 liter growler or by the glass. To achieve this, we make the wine in Napa Valley, ship the full barrels down here and using our patented technology that displaces the wine in the barrel with inert gas, serve the wine directly out the barrel until it’s empty. 93% of growlers are returned for sanitizing and refilling. In 8 years the concept has avoided the use of 170,000 traditional wine bottles.
