I oversee Quality Control and Quality Assurance, planning, and coordination for the San Diego County Water Authority Construction Projects. The San Diego County Water Authority (SDCWA)sustains a $245 billion regional economy and the quality of life for 3.3 million residents. As part of the construction group, Karla works constantly to ensure that its complex network of water transportation, treatment, and storage facilities operate and maintain efficiently so it can provide a safe, reliable water supply to support the region’s economy and the quality of life of its residents. Prior to working for the Water Authority, Karla worked as an Engineer for Kiewit Infrastructure West Coast, where she sharpened her skills on the I-405 Sepulveda Pass Improvements Project. On this project, Karla managed trade crews and projects. She also organized construction meetings and schedules. This role gave her hands-on field experience in implementing corrective and cost-saving measures as needed.

Q: What advice would you give to people?

My advice to people is to be yourself and get back to your community. You never know what impact you have without people taking the time to support their community. I would not be where I am today, so I always try to pay it forward.

Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 to 10 years?

In 5 to 10 years, I hope to be in a healthy relationship and in a leading role in Construction/Engineering, where my impact inspires young black and brown youth to enter into STEM or trade careers.
