I’m a passionate biochemist originally from Oklahoma City, OK, whose journey in medicine and science brought me to San Diego in 2013. My career path has traversed the scientific industry, encompassing extensive experience in manufacturing and academia, with aspirations to one day contribute to the government sector. My ultimate goal is to become a Medical Research Physician, focusing on studying challenging diseases and developing new therapies to serve the most underserved communities.
From a young age, I’ve always believed that true success is found in actions that serve others. Despite not having a formal business background, I took the leap to transform my favorite hobby into a meaningful enterprise, leading to the creation of MQ Chess Club.
For the past ten years, I’ve been playing chess in the vibrant streets of downtown San Diego, particularly in the Gaslamp Quarter. My approach to “playing chess in the wild” means engaging in the game in unexpected and unconventional places, fostering unique interactions. This method of playing has proven to break down barriers, bringing together people from all walks of life to intellectually spar and develop a deeper appreciation for one another.
Through MQ Chess Club, my mission is to establish a community organization that nurtures the psyche, dismantles social barriers, and offers fresh perspectives to individuals who might otherwise be deprived of such opportunities due to their life circumstances. Currently, we are focusing on the educational sector by building chess clubs in underserved community schools—a cause particularly dear to me as a father to a wonderful daughter who stands to benefit directly from these initiatives.
In addition to my work with MQ Chess Club, I am actively involved with the ABC Youth Foundation, a community organization & prevention program dedicated to helping students step off in life with their best foot forward. At the foundation, I serve as a mentor, tutor in STEM subjects, and trainer in the gym, guiding young minds and bodies towards a brighter future.
I firmly believe that my unique approach to chess, combined with my commitment to education and youth development, can make a significant impact on our community, fostering a sense of connection and mutual respect among its members.
About Quincy X. Brown
Q: Please tell us a little bit about your family.
My family is the cornerstone of my life. I am married to the love of my life, Kymber, and we have a genius child named Zara. Kymber and I moved to San Diego around the same time from different cities, fell in love, got married, and welcomed baby Zara into our lives. I’m incredibly proud to share that Kymber graduated from medical school in May 2024, and I have no doubt she will become the best doctor anyone has ever seen. Zara, who is my heart, behaves well beyond her years and continues to amaze us every day.
Q: Please tell us about your current, past, or future career. What do you love most about what you do?
I have two distinct yet interconnected careers: one in the medical science field and the other as a community activist. Career One: Medical Science In the past, I was a passionate student deeply focused on mastering the intricacies of chemistry and the human body. My dedication led me to become a graduate well-versed in these areas. Today, I am a seasoned scientist with extensive experience working in various types of laboratories. My work has spanned diverse fields such as green energy, pancreatic cancer research, medical device manufacturing, cosmetics, and clinical research. Each of these roles has enriched my understanding and expertise in medical science. Looking to the future, I aim to return to academia to pursue an MD/PhD in Biochemistry and Bioinformatics. My goal is to specialize in anesthesiology and focus on research in pain management, addressing one of the most critical challenges in medicine. This path will allow me to merge my scientific background with clinical practice, driving innovation in patient care. Career Two: Community Activism My journey in community activism began with a strong interest in volunteerism and service. Throughout my life, I have consistently volunteered my time to help others, whether through organizations like Greenpeace, hospitals, medical treatment centers, or local youth organizations such as the ABC Youth Foundation. These experiences have allowed me to directly serve the youth of Southeast San Diego and the greater metropolitan area. Currently, I am developing MQ Chess Club, which at first glance may not seem like traditional community activism. However, the unique way I approach chess brings people from all walks of life together, fostering a sense of community and mutual support. For instance, during one of our sessions, a homeless youth connected with a local player who then helped them find housing, demonstrating the profound impact of our interactions. In the future, I envision taking my experiences and perspectives into the political arena. I believe that to enact lasting change, one must engage politically. Whether it looks like running for a city council seat or submitting proposals to the governor, I want my efforts to be scrutinized and supported by my peers and the community. Ultimately, my aim is to drive initiatives that bring the greatest benefit to all of us. What I love most about my dual careers is the ability to blend my passion for science with my commitment to community service. In the lab, I thrive on the challenge of solving complex problems and developing new therapies that can improve lives. In the community, I find joy in bringing people together, breaking down barriers, and fostering positive change through chess and activism. Both careers allow me to make meaningful contributions, whether by advancing scientific knowledge or by directly impacting individuals’ lives.
Q: What advice would you give to people?
Reflecting on my journey, I’ve found several key principles that have guided me through my dual careers in medical science and community activism. These principles form the core of the advice I would offer to others: 1. Embrace Lifelong Learning and Curiosity: In both my scientific career and my community work, the willingness to continuously learn and stay curious has been crucial. Whether it’s mastering the complexities of biochemistry or discovering the impact of community chess, always seek knowledge and embrace new experiences. Lifelong learning not only enhances your professional skills but also enriches your personal growth. 2. Serve Others with Compassion: True success lies in actions that serve and uplift others. Throughout my life, from volunteering with organizations like Greenpeace and the ABC Youth Foundation to mentoring youth and leading the MQ Chess Club, I’ve seen the profound impact of service. By dedicating your time and energy to help those around you, you create a ripple effect of positive change in your community. 3. Foster Community and Connection: Building meaningful connections with people from all walks of life is essential. The unique approach of “playing chess in the wild” has taught me that shared activities can break down barriers and foster mutual understanding. Whether through a game of chess or any other shared interest, find ways to bring people together and create spaces for open dialogue and support. 4. Integrate Faith and Purpose: As a scientist who rigorously analyzes data and as a person of faith, I’ve come to appreciate the value of believing in something greater than oneself. My Christian faith has propelled me into a life of service, and I believe that God’s purpose for me is to help others. I have witnessed lives change in miraculous ways that can only be explained by divine intervention. Faith provides a foundation of hope and purpose, guiding you through challenges and inspiring you to make a difference. 5. Balance Professional Ambitions with Community Involvement: Pursue your professional goals with dedication, but also make time for community involvement. Balancing my career aspirations in medical research with my community activism has not only fulfilled me personally but also allowed me to contribute to society in diverse ways. Aim to integrate your professional skills with your passion for service to create a well-rounded and impactful life. By embracing these principles—continuous learning, compassionate service, fostering connections, integrating faith, and balancing ambitions—you can lead a fulfilling life that positively impacts both your career and your community. Remember, the greatest achievements often come from a place of love, faith, and a genuine desire to make the world a better place.
Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 to 10 years?
In 5 Years: In five years, I envision having successfully balanced my dual career paths—continuing my work as a scientist while growing MQ Chess Club into a stable and thriving organization. My scientific career will help sustain my livelihood in San Diego, allowing me to pursue my passion for community engagement through chess. By this time, MQ Chess Club will have a strong presence in at least three local schools, providing structured and impactful chess programs for students. We will have navigated the complexities of running a 501(c)(3) organization, gaining experience in compliance and operational efficiency. Additionally, we will be poised to launch phase two of our initiative, which involves bringing chess to senior citizens and residents in advanced care medical facilities. I believe that chess can play a significant role in maintaining cognitive health and preventing mental health disorders among these populations. With these achievements, I will have gained the confidence and experience needed to tackle new challenges and further expand the reach of MQ Chess Club. In 10 Years: In ten years, MQ Chess Club will be a fully functional and well-established community organization, both financially and structurally. We will have mastered several key areas of our mission, solidifying our identity as a bridge-building and therapeutic community service through chess. By this point, we will have gathered substantial data and stories demonstrating the positive impact of our approach. My focus will then shift towards analytics, understanding the full scope of the benefits our programs offer. I will aim to dispel myths and provide evidence-based insights into the therapeutic and cognitive benefits of chess. This data will be instrumental in challenging others to adopt our methods and replicate our success across the United States. We will offer blueprints and guidance for other communities to implement similar programs, expanding our impact far beyond San Diego. At this stage, I will begin to transition towards my long-term goal of pursuing an MD/PhD. With a strong foundation laid by MQ Chess Club, I will immerse myself in medical studies, focusing on opportunities to connect my life experience into what it takes to be a doctor. My aim is to integrate my clinical knowledge with the understanding of the medicinal benefits of chess, further validating and expanding the therapeutic potential of this beloved game. In summary, my ten-year plan involves growing MQ Chess Club into a national model for community and cognitive health through chess, transitioning to a focus on medical research, and ultimately combining these passions to enhance the well-being of diverse populations.
Quincy X. Brown & Our Community
Q: What are a few of your favorite restaurants in our community?
As a chemist, my love for food began at a young age when I realized that cooking was my first introduction to chemistry. Here are three of my favorite restaurants in San Diego that satisfy my diverse culinary cravings: Bowlegged BBQ 4255 Market St, San Diego, CA 92102, United States Being from Oklahoma, I have a deep appreciation for authentic barbecue, which we Midwesterners know well. Bowlegged BBQ, along with Phil’s BBQ, comes closest to the smoky, savory flavors of my home state. Though a bit pricey, the quality of their smoked meats and rich, flavorful sauce makes it worth every penny for those craving a taste of genuine barbecue. Mr Holy Gao 10066 Pacific Heights Blvd, Unit 101, San Diego, CA 92121, United States A lesser-known fact about me is that I lived in Chongqing, China, for a year, where I experienced some of the best food in the world, especially from the Szechuan region. Mr Holy Gao is one of the rare places in California that offers authentic Szechuan cuisine, bringing back fond memories of my time in China. I highly recommend being adventurous and trying their unique and flavorful dishes. Richard Walker’s Pancake House 520 Front St, San Diego, CA 92101, United States I was never a fan of breakfast until my wife introduced me to Richard Walker’s Pancake House. This place has completely changed my perception of breakfast with its fresh coffee, reasonably priced menu, and delicious food. Their apple-style pancake is a standout dish that’s worth an early morning visit. It’s a must-try for anyone looking to start their day with a satisfying meal.
Q: How long have you lived or worked in our community?

The most interesting person in my community is my mentor, Billy Moore, President and CEO of the ABC Youth Foundation. With over thirty years of involvement in the boxing community, Mr. Moore has trained and worked with some of the best athletes in the sport. For the past twenty-five years, he has led the ABC Youth Foundation, continuing the legacy of his father, Archie Moore, who founded the organization in 1957. Despite being in his 70s, Billy Moore tirelessly fights every day to help the youth of San Diego. His dedication has touched the lives of hundreds of young people, guiding many of them to become successful and productive members of society. Beyond his local impact, he has a passion for world missions and has traveled to more than thirty countries, always with a mission to give back and serve. Billy Moore’s unwavering commitment to the community, his extensive experience as a Boxing Analyst and Commentator, and his lifelong dedication to youth development make him an inspiring and influential figure. His perseverance and passion continue to inspire me and many others in San Diego.
Q: What current or former local business makes you the most nostalgic about our community?
One business that makes me nostalgic about our community is Rudford’s Restaurant in North Park. Rudford’s has been a San Diego staple since 1949, known for its classic American diner experience and its unique charm. Open 24/7, it has been a beloved spot for locals and visitors alike to enjoy a meal at any hour of the day or night. When I first moved to San Diego in June 2013, Rudford’s was one of the first places I discovered. The welcoming atmosphere and the fact that it was always open made it an ideal spot for me, whether I was grabbing a late-night bite after a long day in the lab or enjoying a hearty breakfast to start my day. The friendly staff and the timeless, comforting menu quickly made it a home away from home. One particularly memorable night, after an exhausting shift at one of my early jobs, I stumbled into Rudford’s around 2 a.m. The place was buzzing with a mix of night owls and early risers, all brought together by the simple pleasure of good food. It was there, over a plate of their famous pancakes, that I felt my first true connection to the San Diego community. The camaraderie and sense of belonging in that diner have stuck with me ever since. Rudford’s isn’t just a restaurant; it’s a piece of San Diego’s history and a reminder of the welcoming spirit that defines our community. Every time I visit, I’m transported back to those early days, filled with hope and the excitement of new beginnings.
Q: What is your favorite thing or something unique about our community?
My favorite thing about San Diego is undoubtedly its beautiful beaches and the vibrant surfing culture. Coming from a landlocked state, I always dreamed of the rolling seas and the freedom they represented. When I moved to San Diego, one of my first stops was the beach, where some local surfers introduced me to the sport that would change my life. The moment I paddled out and caught my first wave, I felt an indescribable connection to the ocean and the community around it. For years, I made regular trips to Surf Diva, a local equipment shop, where I would rent a board and wetsuit before spending hours in the water. The shop itself became a place of learning and camaraderie, where I could always find advice, encouragement, and the latest surf gear. Surfing has become more than just a hobby; it’s a way of life that has profoundly influenced my outlook and well-being. The ocean’s ever-changing nature teaches me patience, resilience, and the joy of living in the moment. Each wave offers a new challenge and a chance to improve, making every surf session a unique and rewarding experience. San Diego’s beaches are not just scenic spots; they are vibrant communities where people from all walks of life come together to enjoy the ocean’s beauty and power. Whether it’s the early morning surfers catching the first waves of the day or the families enjoying a sunny afternoon, the beach embodies the spirit of San Diego—a place of connection, adventure, and endless possibilities. The sense of peace and fulfillment I find in surfing, coupled with the stunning natural beauty of San Diego’s coastline, makes this city truly special to me. The beaches and the surf culture have enriched my life in ways I never imagined, making San Diego not just a place I live, but a place I deeply love.
Q: If you could choose anyone alive today and not a relative, with whom would you love to have lunch? Why? And where locally would you meet for this lunch?
If I could choose anyone alive today to have lunch with, it would be Samuel L. Jackson. He is not only an iconic actor but also someone whose work has had a significant impact on me. Two of my favorite movies, “Formula 51” and “Pulp Fiction,” feature his outstanding performances. In “Formula 51,” Jackson plays Elmo McElroy, a brilliant chemist who creates a new, powerful drug formula. The movie blends action, humor, and a unique plot, highlighting Jackson’s versatility as an actor. As a chemist myself, I found his role particularly fascinating, merging my interests in science and cinema in a thrilling narrative. “Pulp Fiction,” directed by Quentin Tarantino, is a cult classic where Jackson plays Jules Winnfield, a philosophical hitman with memorable dialogue and a commanding presence. His performance in this film is nothing short of legendary, and the character’s introspective moments and powerful lines have left a lasting impression on me. The film’s nonlinear storytelling and rich character development make it a masterpiece, and Jackson’s role is central to its enduring appeal. For our lunch, I would take Samuel L. Jackson to Mr. Holy Gao, a fantastic spot for authentic Szechuan cuisine in San Diego. Given my deep appreciation for Chinese food, especially from my time living in Chongqing, it would be the perfect place to share a meal and conversation. Over dishes that remind me of my experiences in China, I would love to discuss his career, his approach to acting, and the impact of his roles on both his audience and himself. Having lunch with Samuel L. Jackson at Mr. Holy Gao would be an unforgettable experience, blending my love for film, food, and meaningful conversation with one of the most captivating actors of our time.
For Fun
Q: What is one of your favorite movies? TV shows?
One of my favorite TV shows is “Rick & Morty,” a animated science fiction sitcom created by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon. The show follows the adventures of an eccentric and alcoholic scientist, Rick Sanchez, and his good-hearted but easily influenced grandson, Morty Smith, as they travel through different dimensions and alternate realities. What draws me to “Rick & Morty” is its unique blend of dark humor, clever storytelling, and thought-provoking themes. The show seamlessly combines absurd and surreal elements with insightful commentary on existentialism, morality, and the human condition. Its irreverent take on science fiction tropes, coupled with its complex characters and intricate plotlines, make it a compelling and entertaining watch. As a fan of both science fiction and humor that pushes boundaries, “Rick & Morty” resonates with me on multiple levels. Its clever writing, witty dialogue, and imaginative world-building keep me engaged and constantly eager for more. Whether it’s exploring the multiverse, delving into existential crises, or simply delivering laughs, “Rick & Morty” never fails to entertain and challenge my perspective.
Q: (Even for friends or family), what is something interesting that most people don’t know about you?
One thing that most people don’t know about me is that I play the violin. Music, particularly the violin, has been one of my first loves since childhood. Despite pursuing a career in science and community activism, music remains a cherished part of my life. Playing the violin allows me to express myself creatively and find solace in the midst of life’s challenges. Whether it’s a classical piece or a melody from my favorite composers, the violin continues to bring me joy and fulfillment in ways that many may not expect.
Q: What would you rate a 10 out of 10?
While there are few things in life that I can confidently rate 10 out of 10, one experience that consistently brings me joy and satisfaction is exploring the Gaslamp Quarter in San Diego and playing chess at unique venues. In particular, I have always had a wonderful time playing chess at Pizza on 5th, located in the heart of the Gaslamp. Despite the bustling atmosphere and late-night chaos of the area, there is a sense of peace and camaraderie that comes from blending the worlds of chess and urban exploration. For me, the experience of engaging in a strategic and intellectually stimulating game of chess amidst the vibrant energy of the Gaslamp Quarter is truly unmatched. It’s a perfect fusion of leisure, social interaction, and mental stimulation, making it a solid 10 out of 10 in my book.

Her presence in my life serves as a constant reminder to strive for growth, both personally and professionally, so that I can be the best version of myself for her and for our family.
