My parents emigrated to the United States in 1971 from Pakistan when I was seven years old. I was actually born in Bombay, India, and our family roots are from Goa, India. Somehow, my parents found a rental in Coronado within a few weeks of arrival (without jobs and college educations), yet they managed to plant roots, and we kids had the privilege of growing up on the island paradise. I graduated from Coronado High School in 1983 and went on to Texas A&M University, graduating with a BS Electrical Engineering degree in 1987. I was always going to be a real estate agent, so it wasn’t long before I got my license in 1989 and never looked back. Along the way, I’ve worked for small local companies to national mega brokerages. In the 2000s, I founded a company, Ascent Real Estate, which grew to become the largest non-affiliated independent brokerage in San Diego. In the past few years, I’ve been developing a new brokerage team under the umbrella of the national cloud brokerage company EXP Realty. Always on to new adventures. I’ve been an avid tennis player since high school, and my ultimate nonbusiness passion is international travel.

About Ken Pecus

Q: Please tell us a little bit about your family.

I have two brothers and a sister, 14 nephews and nieces, and 11 great-nephews and nieces. My husband, Tom and I have been together for 29.9 years.. as in 29 years together and nine years legally married. My side of the family lives here in Coronado or San Diego, and Tom’s side hails from Boston.

Q: Please tell us about your current, past, or future career. What do you love most about what you do?

I am a real estate agent, broker, teacher, team builder, and entrepreneur. I love when I’m able to create a deal structure or financial picture that comes together, and everybody involved can see how it benefits all of them, not just one party.

Q: What advice would you give to people?

Be happy first with whatever and wherever you are in life. Don’t search for happiness in something else. Find it in you first, and then experience what the outside has to offer

Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 to 10 years?

Doing exactly what I’m doing now, however, with even more new people in my life and experiencing whatever new exciting adventure the world happens to be offering up then.

Ken Pecus & Our Community

Q: What are a few of your favorite restaurants in our community?

My favorites tend to close, so I’m going to not jinx any of them by naming the current ones 🙂

Q: How long have you lived or worked in our community?

Moved to Coronado in 1971 as a kid and never left. Been working in Coronado and San Diego since completing College in 1987

Q: Who is the most interesting person you’ve met here in our community?

Couldn’t even begin to answer, as my experience has been a continuous stream of interesting people!

Q: What current or former local business makes you the most nostalgic about our community?

I don’t get nostalgic. I enjoy good memories, but more so, I live in the present

Q: What is your favorite thing or something unique about our community?

My favorite thing is the complete experience of living in San Diego. Starting with the weather, we have little that we don’t have at our fingertips.

Q: If you could choose anyone alive today and not a relative, with whom would you love to have lunch? Why? And where locally would you meet for this lunch?

Oprah. Because she seems to be a conversationalist who has evolved through her interactions with well-known people. It’s almost like I could be meeting so many more people in the world for the price of one. I would invite her over for lunch at my house; we can do whatever takeout she wants, and that way, she wouldn’t be distracted by other people recognizing her.

For Fun

Q: What is one of your favorite movies? TV shows?

Mamma Mia – the original movie, currently, Ghosts TV show

Q: (Even for friends or family), what is something interesting that most people don’t know about you?

Nope, I’m pretty much an open-book

Q: What would you rate a 10 out of 10?

My life

Q: Who inspires you to be better?

My parents memories

Q: What community organizations and/or local nonprofits do you admire/support?

Youth Sports, LGBT organizations, and Monarch School

Q: What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

Too much to limit to just one “best”. But… My parents taught me to treat people well, and always tell the truth. Can’t really go wrong with that.

Q: What Neighborhood do you live in?

Mission Hills

What I love about my Neighborhood:

I love the style of homes and the easy location to so much of what makes San Diego so appealing. The views are amazing!

Please describe your ideal San Diego weekend:

Playing tennis both mornings, Enjoying a long walk along one of the many coastal options, and exploring dinner at one of our numerous favorite restaurants around the city

Q: Finally, what three words or phrases come to mind when you think of the word HOME?
