I am a proud daughter of immigrant parents and a first-generation college graduate. Family and community are at the heart of who I am. I’m a mom, partner, sister, aunt, friend, and mentor, always striving to uplift those around me. I love animals, spending time outdoors, and finding joy in simple things, whether it’s hiking, exploring new places, or just soaking in the beauty of nature. I believe in the power of connection and belonging, and I’m passionate about creating spaces where people feel seen, heard, and valued. Helping others grow and thrive is something that drives me every day, both personally and in the ways I show up for my community.
About Nancy Maldonado
Q: Please tell us a little bit about your family.
My family is from Mexico, and our roots and traditions are a big part of who I am. I come from a close-knit family and am the youngest of three. I have two older brothers and three incredible nieces and nephews who keep life fun and full of energy. At home, I have a son who is my greatest joy, and we share our space with our beloved rescue dog. But my role as an aunt goes beyond just my human nieces and nephews. I am also an aunt to a cow, as well as a number of pet chickens, a rabbit, three dogs, and a cat. Family, whether human, furry, or feathery, means everything to me, and I cherish the time we spend together.
Q: Please tell us about your current, past, or future career. What do you love most about what you do?
My career has always been rooted in community, advocacy, and creating spaces where people feel valued and included. I have had the privilege of working in leadership roles that focus on people and belonging. Right now, I help shape policies and programs that support a more inclusive healthcare environment for employees, patients, and families. Before this, I was the President and Chief Executive Officer of a local nonprofit, where I worked to expand programs, advocate for policies that promote equity, and strengthen community partnerships. I have also had the opportunity to teach and facilitate leadership development, which is something I am truly passionate about. What I love most about my work is the ability to create meaningful change. Whether it is helping an organization transform its culture, mentoring future leaders, or advocating for policies that create more opportunities for others, I am driven by the impact this work can have on people’s lives. Seeing individuals and communities thrive because they feel seen, heard, and supported is what inspires me every day. Looking ahead, I hope to continue driving change, mentoring leaders, and contributing to a more inclusive and just world.
Q: What advice would you give to people?
The best advice I can give is to stay true to who you are and never underestimate the power of your voice and your story. Your experiences, background, and perspective matter. Surround yourself with people who lift you up and challenge you to grow. Find mentors, build community, and never be afraid to ask for help. No one succeeds alone, and the relationships you build along the way will be just as important as the work you do. Also, do not be afraid to take up space. Whether in your career, in leadership, or in any part of life, you belong in the rooms you walk into. Believe in yourself, trust your instincts, and keep pushing forward, even when things feel uncertain.
Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 to 10 years?
I see myself continuing to do work that creates meaningful change, whether in leadership, advocacy, or education. I hope to be in a position where I can influence systems and policies that promote equity, belonging, and opportunities for all people. I also see myself mentoring and supporting the next generation of leaders, helping them grow into their full potential. On a personal level, I want to continue learning and evolving. I hope to complete my PhD and use my research to drive impactful change in leadership and organizational culture. I also see myself finding more ways to balance my professional and personal life, spending more time outdoors, traveling, and making memories with my family. Most importantly, I want to continue leading with purpose and passion, making a difference in the communities I serve while staying true to my values and the things that bring me joy.
Nancy Maldonado & Our Community
Q: What are a few of your favorite restaurants in our community?
Because I eat a primarily plant-based diet, I stick to vegetarian or vegan restaurants. Plant Power and Plumeria are a couple of my favorites.
Q: How long have you lived or worked in our community?
I have lived and worked in San Diego for almost 20 years!
Q: Who is the most interesting person you’ve met here in our community?
There are too many to choose just one.
Q: What current or former local business makes you the most nostalgic about our community?
All the small businesses in my neighborhood that have stood the test of time, including surviving a global pandemic.
Q: What is your favorite thing or something unique about our community?
Mission Trails is an incredible gem where I could spend hours.
Q: If you could choose anyone alive today and not a relative, with whom would you love to have lunch? Why? And where locally would you meet for this lunch?
I would choose Michelle Obama. She is an incredible leader, advocate, and role model, and I admire how she uses her platform to uplift others, especially young people and communities of color. Her work in education, health, and leadership development is inspiring, and I would love the opportunity to talk with her about creating lasting change and empowering the next generation. We would meet at Kindred, a local vegan restaurant. The atmosphere is unique, and the food is amazing. Plus, I love that it aligns with values of sustainability and conscious living. I imagine it would be the perfect setting for a deep and inspiring conversation over a delicious meal.
