Hello! I’m the dentist and owner of The Dental House in the wonderful community of La Mesa.

My journey into dentistry began in childhood. As a toddler, I had a mouth full of cavities and needed treatment under general anesthesia. Rather than deter me, this experience sparked my interest in teeth and healthcare. By the age of 14, I knew I wanted to become a dentist.

Health and wellness are important to me personally as well. In my free time, I love to exercise, hike, and camp. I often visit the farmer’s market to pick up fresh ingredients for meals I prepare for friends and family. I’m on a lifelong journey of self-improvement.

About Jane Vu Svec

Q: Please tell us a little bit about your family.

I am the fifth of six children and grew up in Iowa. My father came to America as a refugee from Vietnam and built a wonderful life in America. His journey taught me the value of hard work and the belief that any circumstance can be changed at any time. I’m supported by my wonderful husband, who specializes in environmental science for the water industry. Together, we’re raising two energetic kids, ages 6 and 3.

Q: Please tell us about your current, past, or future career. What do you love most about what you do?

After spending 9 years at La Mesa Dental, I chose to start The Dental House. I’m here for the long haul, and I hope to make a lasting impact on the residents and the community of La Mesa. Dentistry is my passion, and I love connecting with others while inspiring them to live consciously and prioritize wellness. My goal is to empower people to make positive changes in their lives, focusing not only on dental and systemic health but also on the well-being of our community and planet.

Q: What advice would you give to people?

“It’s never too late to be what you might have been.” -George Eliot. Focus on the positive, and practice gratitude.

Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 to 10 years?

In 5-10 years, I see myself growing The Dental House and becoming a recognized part of the La Mesa community. I expect to have learned a lot during that time and look forward to paying it forward to the community, especially to school-aged children and families!

Jane Vu Svec & Our Community

Q: What are a few of your favorite restaurants in our community?

I love Vallarta Express on Jackson Blvd- their breakfast burritos are amazing. Tamarind Thai restaurant is a staple in my routine and the newly opened Oodles is fantastic!

Q: How long have you lived or worked in our community?

This coming January will mark 10 years that I’ve worked in La Mesa.

Q: Who is the most interesting person you’ve met here in our community?

As a tenured dentist, I’ve had the privilege of meeting thousands of fascinating La Mesa residents. One of the most interesting people I’ve met is fellow dentist Charles Campanella. We first crossed paths while volunteering at the free dental clinic at Father Joe’s Village, which he actually helped establish decades ago. He’s full of captivating stories and is truly a stand-up man.

Q: What current or former local business makes you the most nostalgic about our community?

All the thrift stores in La Mesa make me nostalgic. Thrifting is one of my favorite hobbies, and when I first visited La Mesa in 2013, I was thrilled by the variety of thrift stores I found. They’re great for the community, the planet, and my budget!

Q: What is your favorite thing or something unique about our community?

The La Mesa Farmer’s Market is fantastic. I love La Mesa Village and how it serves as a true focal point, bringing people together through its great businesses and events.

Q: If you could choose anyone alive today and not a relative, with whom would you love to have lunch? Why? And where locally would you meet for this lunch?

I wish to meet the Dalai Lama, a peaceful and funny individual who has endured much since childhood. I’d love to share a pot of tea with him at the Aubrey Rose Tea Room.

For Fun

Q: What is one of your favorite movies? TV shows?

I love comedy shows and artistic movies. I watch the same shows again and again: The Office, Parks and Recreation, 30 Rock, Arrested Development. My favorite movies are: Moulin Rouge, Amelie, and Across the Universe.

Q: (Even for friends or family), what is something interesting that most people don’t know about you?

People are always surprised to hear me sing and play the guitar. Singing fills my soul, and I play the guitar well enough to sing around a campfire.

Q: What would you rate a 10 out of 10?

A fresh, hand-made croissant.

Q: Who inspires you to be better?

My children inspire me to be better, and my husband pushes me to grow. Together, we’ve committed to becoming the best versions of ourselves by continually learning, staying open-minded, and connecting with others. I’m inspired to help our local La Mesa community and our global community. I strive to live consciously and make better choices every day in order to leave every place better than I found it.

La Mesa Green Business, La Mesa Chamber of Commerce, La Mesa Village Association,

I live in Encinitas.

What I love about my Neighborhood:

My neighborhood is the coastal La Mesa. It is a historic community with a lively main street and community events. It is walkable and there are lots of public amenities like the library and coaster station.

Please describe your ideal San Diego weekend:

My ideal San Diego weekend starts with a delicious breakfast, whether at home or out, followed by time spent outdoors. I’d love to go on a nature hike to a beautiful destination where I can enjoy a picnic. Later, I’d head to Convoy Street for some Vietnamese food and dessert. The perfect ending would be playing games with friends and family at home.
