I am originally from the deep south, but have lived in San Diego for many years. I love San Diego! I love the relaxed vibe, the fun social scene, and the ability to be outside almost literally every day of the year. I’m an avid jogger and fitness enthusiast, and I enjoy fashion, costumes, music and dancing, and everything social. My hobbies includes sewing and “old-fashioned” needlework such as crochet, knit, and hand embroidery, as well as costume and fashion design. My design brand, Belle the Kat, offers bespoke accessories and styling. I also love reading and have self-published three novels under my pen name, Annjea Morgan Llewor.
About Kathy Cameron (Kathy Butler Hord)
Q: Please tell us a little bit about your family.
I am related through my ex-husband to the celebrated sculptor Donal Hord, and am blessed to own a few of his minor works, as well as a few beautiful pieces created by Donal’s wife Florence Hord. I have two adult children who are the loves of my life.
Q: Please tell us about your current, past, or future career. What do you love most about what you do?
I have had many amazing opportunities in my professional life. I currently work as an advisor for a major consultng firm in the area of contract negotiation.
Q: What advice would you give to people?
My favorite piece of general advice is, believe what you believe and know why you believe it. Equally valuable advice is, avoid conflicts that will divide you from people. American society seems to have lost our ability to disagree and remain friends. It is okay to disagree with friends – iron sharpens iron! Stop being offended, and if the topic causes trouble, simply agree to disagree and avoid the subject.
Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 to 10 years?
I plan to remain in San Diego and continue to enjoy an active professional, fitness, and social life. In five to ten years, I will still be rising!
Kathy Cameron (Kathy Butler Hord) & Our Community
Q: What are a few of your favorite restaurants in our community?
I’m not much of a foodie, so I have no good answer here. With that said, I love the vibe at Pacifica in Del Mar, and Eddie V’s in La Jolla.
Q: How long have you lived or worked in our community?
I’ve lived in California since I graduated University and in San Diego almost all of that time.
Q: Who is the most interesting person you’ve met here in our community?
Oh my goodness, where to begin! I’ve love meeting people and hearing their stories. I can’t really name one specific individual.
Q: What current or former local business makes you the most nostalgic about our community?
There are so many wonderful local businesses in San Diego. I do feel particularly nostalgic when in Balboa Park at the Prado restaurant – it is one of the places I remember going when I first came to San Diego. The fountain in the courtyard features the Donal Hord sculpture “Woman of Tehuantepec” – I own one of the proof pieces for this amazingly expressive piece of art.
Q: What is your favorite thing or something unique about our community?
San Diego has an amazing small-town vibe that has remained intact even as the community has blossomed to over three million people. It’s hard to meet a stranger in San Diego. I think this friendliness and casual ease is the hallmark of our community and so unique! You don’t feel that same vibe in other large metropolitan areas.
Q: If you could choose anyone alive today and not a relative, with whom would you love to have lunch? Why? And where locally would you meet for this lunch?
I would really enjoy meeting and getting to know Sheila Gujrathi. As a female CEO of one of San Diego’s premier biotech companies, I would love to hear her story while enjoying amazing views, perhaps at the Marine Room in La Jolla.
For Fun
Q: What is one of your favorite movies? TV shows?
I enjoy action and adventure shows! An old favorite movie is Road House with Patrick Swayze. One of my favorite recent television shows is The Ambassador! The international political intrigue makes it an edge-of-the-seat kind of experience.
Q: (Even for friends or family), what is something interesting that most people don’t know about you?
I think many people would be surprised to know that I’m shy! While I love to be social and make small talk, I don’t share much about myself.
Q: What would you rate a 10 out of 10?
Pretty much nothing gets a 10 out of 10 for me. Ten is an unachievable ideal. But I would rate any number of things as 9! However, this question is too open-ended to provide a concrete answer.
Q: Who inspires you to be better?
My best friend has definitely inspired me to be better! We facetime several days a week and try to get together as often as we can, although we are both busy with careers. She reminds me not to be too hard on myself.
Q: What community organizations and/or local nonprofits do you admire/support?
I am a proud member of the board for the Business Associates Group! This wonderful non-profit literally donates 100% of everything to charity. There is no overhead, and there are no paid positions. Charities supported include Scripps Cancer Center and local food banks, among others. I am also a very active member of the San Diego chapter of the Project Management Institute, where I have served as Registration Manager for well over ten years. I love registering people at events because I literally get to meet and talk to everyone!
Q: What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
I’m not sure – it depends I suppose on what is happening in my life at any given time. I have developed several philosophies that I follow, rather than advise. But maybe a fun one, that I try to follow and share as often as possible, is, “Motion is the lotion”. It is so important to move our bodies every day! It improves physical and mental health and boosts our mood and immune system.
Q: What Neighborhood do you live in?
I live in, and love, Rancho Penasquitos!
What I love about my Neighborhood:
RPQ is a small, friendly community brimming with children! We are close to the 15 and 52 freeways and ten minutes from the beach. It’s a great place to be!
Please describe your ideal San Diego weekend:
Saturday morning work-out, Saturday evening dancing with friends, and Sunday morning at church!
Q: Finally, what three words or phrases come to mind when you think of the word HOME?
Cozy, warm and safe! I love my home.
